Justin King | BIM Specialist
Justin didn’t decide on architecture because he loved Legos, like many people in the field do. Instead, they grew up in a tech-savvy home, primarily because their mom worked in IT. “The tech piece of my career was natural. My interest in architecture began because of an old box truck,” they explain. “It was abandoned on the roadside near my house. The ‘van life’ thing intrigued me, and I was infatuated with space planning—how to live in that truck and how to organize it efficiently. I could spend hours working on drawings.”
That imaginative part of architecture appealed to Justin’s creative heart, bolstered by their computer acumen. And they haven’t looked back.
Justin even experienced a coincidental affirmation that architecture was the right choice.
“I was walking to the light-rail station from my first architecture job, and I passed by a bookshop with a book display out front. I couldn’t resist. One title stood out, called The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard. Being a lover of both poetry and outer space (and willing to judge a book by its title), I bought it. It sat unopened for several weeks. Then one day my mentor recommended a book to me...the very same Poetics of Space book. Of all the displayed books that day, I found THAT book—an edition that doesn’t utter the word ‘architecture’ anywhere. To this day it still gives me goosebumps!”
Justin feels that finding a place at NewStudio is also affirming their career choice. “Overall? It’s wonderful!”
Favorite Office Supply: Hands down, the Post-it Note
What Most People Don’t Know About Me: I can solve a Rubik’s cube.
When I’m Not At NewStudio, I’m: Practicing art, shooting photos, doing tricks and hanging out with my friends on my BMX bike, and enjoying the small moments in nature (i.e., staring at bugs and wondering about their tiny little lives).
My Favorite Vegetable: Botanically, there is no such thing as vegetables (Google it), but in a culinary sense, carrots, potatoes, or peas are all tied for first in my book.
