MODERN LAKE HOME [WHITE BEAR LAKE, MN]

At first, the midcentury design of the 1940s lakeside home seemed like an enticing renovation project. Then the construction team moved into action and discovered that the old foundation was compromised. More digging led to more disheartening discoveries. In the end, all that could be safely saved were the original fireplace and a second-floor bedroom with a tuck-under garage—and, importantly, the essence of its original design.

Today, the reconstructed home maximizes stunning lakeside views with nearly floor-to-ceiling windows in the dining area, living room, and family room. The kitchen also looks out to the lake and incorporates multiple built-ins to leverage functionality as well as the minimalistic style. For example, the coffee hutch features a hideaway appliance garage and a pull-out counter for easy access to the brewing equipment as well as handy drawers for bean and tea storage, cups, and to-go mugs.

Teak, a prominent midcentury design element for cabinetry and other woodwork, also reflects the homeowners’ love for boating. A striking custom-painted blue wall in the living room, a nod to the home’s original era, complements the two-sided fireplace that uses a central nook for logs and kindling. Everywhere, sleek lines maintain the midcentruy aesthetic that first attracted the homeowners while providing ample space for the family to relax, entertain, and enjoy lakeside living.
